The Dog Days of Summer : Staying Cool
The “Dog Days of Summer” are the hot, sultry days of summer. They were historically the period following the rising of the star system Sirius (known as the "Dog Star"), which Hellenistic astrology connected with heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, fever, mad dogs, and bad luck. They are now taken to be the hottest and most uncomfortable part of summer in the Northern Hemisphere.
The Northern Hemisphere is seeing record heat across the globe.
I collected a few tips to help everyone stay cool and safe, but there are many more tips for safety and health, so be sure to check with your local health agencies and government resources.
Staying Cool
Drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated is critical for perspiration to regulate our body temperature.
Wear light-colored clothing. Dark-colored or heavy clothes can keep the body hot and limit cooling from the evaporation of perspiration.
Look for shade when you are outside.
Cover windows to keep out the sun.
Move air with a fan to try to bring in cool air - if the heat index is below the high 90s Fahrenheit. At and above that point, blowing air won't make you feel better and could actually make you feel worse, according to the EPA.
"Dog Days Are Over" is a song by English indie rock band Florence and the Machine from their debut album Lungs (2009). I got to hear her perform it live once at the Beale Street Music Festival and it was amazing.
