Snail Mail
You got Mail!
I'm finally back to writing and drawing. I wish there was an elaborate explanation for being absent the last month. My UX/UI consulting was very busy and Minerva(my Sphinx cat) was not feeling well.
While I did not find time to create finished illustrations, I did draw in my notebook everyday for work, even if just a little doodle. One of the characters that developed over the last month was this letter/mail character. They became an unintended metaphor for how slow(snail mail) I was to work on my own projects and the newsletter. On the positive side, at least I was trying to doodle something.
I refined and collected the letter character for this new illustration. While drawing, I reflected on actual writing letters when I was a kid, rather than emails. There was a suspense and delight on receiving letters from friends and family in far away places. Letter writing is a lovely analog skill that is a forgotten art.
The movie You Got Mail was in my thoughts while making the final illustration. The soundtrack has some wonderful songs on it including a version of Over the Rainbow by Harry Nilsson. The song that came into my mind was The Letter by the Boxtops, perhaps because my cousin Tom Rigsby was the drummer from 1970-73.
I hope this email brings a little happiness to your day.
Stay curious and creative. Be Kind.
Bonus:
Here are the pencil sketches for the letter/mail character.
