Shakespeare, Stewart, and Sonnet 116
Valentine's Day is a few days away. The day often serves as a beacon for us to express our love for the important people in our lives. A better use of the day is to let it be a reminder for us to share our love with those we care about regularly and often throughout the year.
William Shakespeare writes about the nature of love in Sonnet 116. This beautiful sonnet is a reminder of the consistency and guidance of love. The fixed mark that will guide us through storms and the span of time.
Sonnet 116
by William Shakespeare
Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments; love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove.
O no, it is an ever-fixèd mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wand'ring bark
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come.
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom:
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.
During the pandemic, Patrick Stewart read through Shakespeare’s sonnets on Instagram. It was a lovely way to connect with everyone during this time. Many people may only know him as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek or Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men series. Patrick Stewart started out as a stage actor and has been in many Shakespeare productions, so when he reads Shakespeare, it is the real deal.
I recently finished listening to Patrick Stewart's memoir, Making It So: A Memoir, which he reads. I really enjoyed learning more about his life and listening to him narrate the stories. If you are a fan of his, I do recommend the book or audiobook.
