The last few weeks have been a lot for many of us, myself included. There has been crisis after crisis in the news and media. It can be a bit overwhelming.
In difficult times, especially in our modern, fast moving digital times, it is important to unplug and pursue analog hobbies and comforts. The news cycles, both good and bad, are fast. Our screens command our attention and our time.
We need to step away from our devices a little every day, or as much as our busy lives allow, to rest and recalibrate. Analog activities without our digital devices or the sensationalism of the news, politics, social media, and current events will help us regain our balance and a sense of peace and happiness.
Analog activities and hobbies have many positive benefits. Activities like reading, journaling, painting, drawing, playing a musical instrument, and cooking/baking are activities that provide a hands-on focus that can help alleviate stress and promote mindfulness, offering us a break from the news and digital stimulation.
I’m not lost on the irony that the final illustrations are digital illustrations. They did start out as colored pencil sketches on paper. I made an effort with these illustrations to make the final image look more analog and reflect the unique feel of the original sketches. I do want more illustrations to feel more analog but retain my ability to scale them to fit various formats. It is a work in progress.
Here are the original sketches.
I did venture a bit into the realm of editorial cartoons this week, and I’m sure that may not sit well with everyone, but it should not surprise anyone who knows me. My sense of fun is still present in the lampoons.
Pick your favorite hobby or analog activity and devote some time to bringing mindfulness and happiness into your life.
Be kind to yourself on your creative journey.
