Last week, there were two companies that made bold moves against the tide of generative AI.
Procreate
First up, the artist community darling app and creative tool Procreate. Procreate CEO James Cuda posted a video online stating Procreate’s stance on AI. The company says that the current path of generative AI is wrong for its platform.
“Creativity is made, not generated.
Generative AI is ripping the humanity out of things. Built on a foundation of theft, the technology is steering us toward a barren future. We think machine learning is a compelling technology with a lot of merit, but the path generative AI is on is wrong for us.”
It was refreshing to see Procreate stand behind the artists who use their tools. I have been a fan of Procreate since day one. I typically work in vector illustration, but their software is amazing.
Halide
The second app to take a turn away from AI is the award winning camera app, Halide. Halide announced a new feature called Process Zero. The new feature is “a process that uses zero AI and zero computational photography to produce beautiful, film-like natural photos.”
Most of us don’t realize how much processing takes place in the images that we take using our iPhones. Other phone companies are using AI to add and remove things to photos. Some people may love these features, but they do take away from the magic of capturing a moment in an image. Halide’s Process Zero is a return to the classical aesthetics of photography, providing a creative tool for photographers.
The world needs more art and photography captured by humans who share with us their gifts, skills, and talents. I hope we see more apps and companies embrace and empower creatives rather than steal their work to maximize their profits and corporate greed.
Four Panel Comic
I made a four panel comic, but I’m not sure if I’m crazy about the story line. The robot turned out ok enough.
Here are two of my sketches from my sketchbook while working on the idea for the comic and illustrations.
Be kind to yourself on your creative journey.

You made it to the end of the newsletter. Here is a video of the Do You Realize by the Flaming Lips. The song is from the album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. 😊
Great to see Procreate and Halide come out against the current trend of AI.
Thoughtful & insightful stuff as always, Andy!
Very good to know that these companies do not follow the mainstream. Thanks for sharing this Andy!
