Round Two. Fight!!
Last week, I shared my interior monologue/ inner critic while creating an illustration. We return this week for round two. The drawing above is the sketch that I liked better, but as you can see, there are things that I do not like in the sketch.
Outlines
I mention Adventure Time in my thought process. In the Adventure Time show guidelines for the artists, they highlight that it is okay for the arm to bend at any point for the pose. I did decide to try out this concept in my illustration. They do prefer bendy arms and shapes, whereas I favor straight lines.
Below are the Adventure Time show guides on drawing arms from the book Adventure Time: The Art of Ooo.
Adding Text
Once I was reasonably happy with the outlines, I sketched out the text in Concepts. I knew I wanted overlapped letters that felt noisy and busy. Sketching in Concepts allowed me to move things around and reposition letters as I sketched.
I had decided to go with the phrase “create a ruckus.” It felt like what the cat rock star needed and something to strive for as creatives making our way in the world trying to get our work seen.
End Result
I’m pretty happy with the way the final illustration turned out. Soon, I will see how the design looks on t-shirts and other items.
I hope you enjoyed a look behind the scenes at the evolution of one of my illustrations.
Be kind to yourself on your creative journey.
