Comfort Drawing
When you are feeling down or tired, do you seek out food, hobbies, TV shows, or books for comfort? What about art or drawing? Technically, drawing, painting, and journaling would fall under the classification of hobby, but for me, drawing is much more than a hobby.
Obviously, I like to draw. It has always been a source of comfort and happiness. My mother is an artist and has always encouraged me to be creative since I could hold a pencil. She still encourages and supports me.
Side note (I know it is a day early): Happy Mother's Day, Mom!! And, Happy Mother's Day to all of the maternal forces of love and inspiration in the world. You inspire us, you nurture us, and you make the world a better place every day.
If I think about drawing as a source of comfort and not drawing for a project, I tend to draw imaginary characters that pop into my mind. The characters could be just faces and most often start with a simple oval. If I don’t know what to draw, I start with an oval and go from there.
If you want to see a video on character design, you can watch this talk on the topic that I did in partnership with Concepts and The Big Draw. I had so much fun working with everyone and could have kept talking for several more hours. I love to draw and hope that my drawings make other people smile.
Be kind to yourself on your creative journey.

You have reached the end of the newsletter. I have always been a fan of artist Keith Haring. He often said that art is for everybody. Here is a short clip about him from PBS SoCal. Speaking of PBS and NPR, they are under attack from the current US government administration. You can help by taking action or donating. Find out more at PBS.
