It is no secret that my illustrations tend to be about cute characters and happy scenes. These drawings bring me joy and happiness to create. The world has enough chaos and division, so I choose to create drawings that make me smile and hopefully evoke a smile in others as well.
Creating a Spooky Cute Cat
Character design and most of the illustrations that I create start with breaking things down into their most basic shapes: squares, circles, triangles, and lines. Even during the sketching phase, I’m building up the drawing with the premise of how the basic shapes fit together.
Once the drawing is imported into Concepts, my vector app of choice, I can use simple shapes from the library or draw them in the app. I mix object shapes and my own redrawing over the concept sketch.
I’ve highlighted the main basic shapes of the illustration in the image below. The overlapping ovals are the center focus, but the oval shapes are repeated again with the eyes and the paws.
Digital Colored Pencils
For this illustration, I knew that I wanted a fuzzy texture and outline to suggest the fur of the black cat. I chose the hard pencil tool for both the outlines and also to fill in the color. The coloring process, even though digital, did feel like using colored pencils.
I decide on the look I want and then use the analog or digital tools to achieve the desired goal. The important part is to play, experiment, and have fun.
Be kind to yourself on your creative journey.

New Designs on Threadless
You made it to the end of the newsletter. There are a lot of great Halloween songs that have been created over the years, but the one that best seemed to fit the personality of this spooky cute cat is Superstition by Stevie Wonder. The overall vibe of the song with that 1970’s era funk is perfect for our curious cat. Here is Stevie Wonder performing Superstition on Sesame Street. 😊
